Safe Voyage Goes Back to Back in Haydock Handicap
Safe Voyage might have only been limited to three runs in 2018 but he really proved himself as a smart handicapper following wins in two huge seven furlong handicaps. The first of those came at Haydock Park where he ran out a six length winner.
Fast forward the calendar a year and he was back at the same venue to defend his title. Only this time he had to overcome a 15lb higher mark and a coffin box draw in stall 14 of 14…and boy did he overcome it!
Jason Hart tried to tuck Safe Voyage in from his wide draw as they raced around the sweeping bend after a couple of furlongs. However, there was plenty of traffic inside him and he was nudged a little wide. What helped though was the runners came off the far rail and up the middle of the course which meant that Safe Voyage had a good position up the home straight. He could be seen travelling noticeably strongly all of the way up the straight and when Jason pressed the button at the furlong pole Safe Voyage’s response was instantaneous. He galloped on strongly to win by just over a length in the end.
This was a mightily impressive performance from the horse off a mark of 103 and it might well be that his future will lie in listed and Group 3 races on the back of this. What a nice problem to have! Many congratulations to his owner Ross Harmon.
