Same track, same trip, better race – same result!
That was the way of things for Safe Voyage at the weekend as he won the Listed Spring Trophy at Haydock Park under Jason Hart. This was his first crack at Listed level and he took the step up in grade well within his stride.
A very strong field was assembled for this contest with the top rated contestant officially rated 115. The runners went a good gallop from the moment the stalls opened and Safe Voyage tucked in just off the pace. Turning for home the field compacted as the race began in earnest. Jason pulled Safe Voyage out initially but after being hit by a strong headwind decided to move back in towards the rail in order to get cover from it. He had to sit tight at the two furlong pole as it got a little tight but a gap appeared at the furlong pole and when it did Safe Voyage burst through it to win by a length and a quarter at the line.
A further rise in class will be in order for Safe Voyage but he is an improving horse who has really hit his straps of late. Our day at Haydock was very nearly even better as Project Bluebook was just denied when finishing second in the feature jump race, the Swinton Hurdle. It was nice to see him back to something like his best though and hopefully consolation awaits him further down the line.
