Safe Voyage Battles it out in Boomerang
The John Quinn Racing competition for horse of the year is all but over. Betting has been suspended and unless one of our flying fillies can win a Group One this season (not impossible) then this seven-year-old has shown his compatriots just how it is done. On Saturday at Leopardstown he score his twelfth career victory when winning the Group Two Clipper Logistics Boomerang Mile. Whilst his previous victories this year have been achieved in smooth, classy style in this contest we witnessed the grit and will to win that he possesses.
A frenetic early pace was set by a couple of horses and Colin Keane opted to sit off the pace. Around the sweeping, home bend Safe Voyage could be seen travelling strongly and stalking down the leaders stride by stride. Our gallant gelding hit the front a furlong from home but Sinawan pounced almost immediately on his outside. The two horses set down for an almighty tussle, Sinawan headed Safe Voyage and looked sure to go on and win the race. Our fella was not for passing though and battled back to put his head in front right on the line – it could not have been closer!
With two Group Two races in the bag this season Safe Voyage has earned a crack at Group One company again. Races such as the Prix de la Foret, QEII and Breeders Cup Turf Mile are all on his radar. We have enjoyed such exciting times already this year. Hopefully, there are more around the corner.
